Using a Laptop Battery ChargerMost laptops now use lithium ion batteries also commonly known as Lilons. The life of a Lilon battery can be managed and extended if you use a laptop battery charger. Lilon batteries should be managed differently than the old nickel based NiCad batteries. In the case of the NiCad batteries you were never supposed to put it on the laptop battery charger until the batteries completely ran out. In the case of the Lilon battery it is a better idea to put your batteries in the laptop battery charger before they run out. To put this another way, lithium batteries should not be run all the way down to prevent "memory effect". First, they don't have a memory effect, and second, running them down tends to reduce their capacity. If the laptop does not need the battery it should be run to about 40% until it is charged in a laptop battery charger. After they are charged be sure to store them in a cool dry place until you are read to use them. LiIon batteries go bad whether they are used or not so sticking them in your laptop battery charger has nothing to do with their longevity. Typically Lilon batteries should last two to three years of being maintained in this way using a laptop battery charger. Make sure that you are using the appropriate type of laptop battery charger to recharge your lithium batteries. This is because if you don’t treat them possible the lithium metal inside them can burn or explode. So the laptop battery charger that is best for this type of battery will have an internal circuit to prevent overcharging (which would cause them to overheat). If your laptop battery charger senses the lithium battery overheating it has several ways of protecting the computer circuits and preventing a fire or explosion. This means shutting it down when the voltage drops, if a short circuit is detected, if a power surge is detected or if the laptop battery charger detects that the battery itself has become wet, hot or damaged in some way. If you have bought a high quality laptop battery charge it will do all of the above. When shopping for laptop battery chargers look for features that will make the recharging of your computer batteries easy. Try and find a model that has no memory and that does not require cycling to prolong a battery’s life. You should also take care of your batteries if you want your laptop battery charger to work efficiently each and every time you insert them. Make sure that you store your batteries at about 40% of their charge capacity and store them in a cool place. Don’t make the mistake of charging them deeply or repeatedly or you could shorten their life. Another tip for avoiding having to charge your batteries as often in our lap top charger is to remove the battery if you are able to run your laptop computer from another source for a period of time.
