Can Computer Laptop Batteries Explode? You have probably heard that computer laptop batteries explode. Unfortunately this is more than an urban myth circulating around the Internet. It’s true! The type of computer laptop batteries that are known to explode are the lithium ion laptop batteries that are commonly used in laptops. However you don’t need to panic if you have these computer laptop batteries as the jury is still out when it comes to determining what really happened when the batteries inside Dell laptop computers started exploding last year. The reason that these type of lithium computer laptop batteries explode is because they contain cobalt oxide. Cobalt oxide has what is called exothermic properties, which means that it can retain and release heat. If the batteries get too hot then they can overheat. Usually your first clue that the battery in your computer is about to explode is smoke spiraling out of the casing, but not always. Sometimes it bursts into flames or explodes and it does so for an unpredictable reason, meaning that it is not the result of using your laptop for too long or something like that. This is a rare occurrence but scary enough that Dell computer recently recalled millions of laptops to avoid lawsuits. However before you become frightening of using this type of computer laptop batteries in your laptop computer keep in mind that it is not known how the people who have had their computers blow up in their face were treating the computer in the first place. In other words, the dell computer company is not sure that the exploding lithium ion batteries weren’t somehow abused or tampered with by the computers that used them. It would be also very difficult for you to buy any other type of computer laptop batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have replaced nickel metal hydride batteries in almost all laptop computers. Lithium is a much more advanced technology but aside from bursting into flames every now and then, it is a more efficient energy source for running your computer For one thing the lithium laptop ion batteries are a lot lighter than the old fashioned computer laptop batteries that were made out of nickel metal hydrid. They are also smaller than the nickel kind. Also lithium laptop ion batteries don’t suffer from the “memory effect” that most computer laptop battery types do. The memory effect occurs in rechargable metal hydride batteries that have not been completely discharged all of their energy before charging. The battery "forgets" what full charge is like and even after hours of charging will not revert same level of power that it used to. Lithium is also the preferred type of computer laptop battery simply because it lasts longer than the other types such as the standard nickel metal hydride battery that used to be inside all for the laptops. However one drawback is that when they do decide to expire, they go all at once. Experts say that lithium ion laptop bodies will last longer if you don’t wait to fully expend all of their energy before charging them.
