The Apple iBook LaptopThe iBook was a very high quality and high tech line of laptop computers sold by Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) between 1999 and 2006. It was targeted at the consumer and education markets, with fewer features and lower prices than the PowerBook, and more recently, the MacBook Pro. The MacBook replaced the iBook line in May 2006 and features Intel technology instead of Apple technology. These ibooks are also not considered to be as elegant as the old apple ibook laptops that had their wires located at the rear instead of on the face of the computer. The Apple iBook was original known for its clamshell design as well as the many different colors that it came in. Like the iMac, the iBook ran a PowerPC G3 chip, and included no legacy Apple interfaces. USB, Ethernet, modem ports and an optical drive were standard. The ports were placed uncovered along the side, as a cover was thought to be fragile. Similarly, there were no latches. The bottom surface had additional power connectors that allowed multiple iBooks to be easily charged on a custom-made rack. Some critics did not like it’s circular design and compared it to a toilet seat. Still it was a cheery looking apple laptop computer that came in colors like tangerine, blueberry and key lime. Another problem with the apple ibook laptop is that it was hard to get serviced. The original iBook's only customer-serviceable parts were the memory (RAM) and AirPort card, accessed via two slots under the easily removed keyboard. No other modifications could be performed in warranty and it took the removal of over forty screws just to get inside the thing. After the reign of the first iBooks had run its profitable course, Apple brought in the ibook Dual USB that was a completely white computer with a lightweight polycarbonate shell that won lots of awards. The latest and greatest models are the G4 and G5 models of the apple ibook laptop. These more recent apple ibooks have such perks as a PowerPC G4 chip and slot-loading optical drives and a. The translucent case finish and magnesium components were replaced with opaque plastics that gave this apple ibook laptop a distinctive professional flair. Many people also appreciated the fact that in this series the plastic display hinge was replaced by a metal one made out of magnesium, which made this portable apple ibook laptop even more durable. However before you buy G3, G4 and G5 models you need to know that there have been defects reported on a lot of motherboards. A petition with thousands of names on it actually forced Apple computer to acknowledge this so now there is a three-year warranty of fixing the motherboards on these models if something should go wrong. It is impossible to get newer models because on May 16, 2006, the Intel-powered MacBook replaced the iBook line. However, on special request (by organizations and initiatives like the MLTI program), Apple still manufactures and distributes iBook G4s.
